Choosing the right barcode standard
Use EAN-13 or UPC-A for retail product packaging scanned at checkout. Code 128 and GS1-128 are better for cartons, pallets, and warehouse labels where more data or logistics identifiers are required.
ITF and ITF-14 are common on corrugated shipping cases. Code 39 remains useful for internal asset tags when you need simple alphanumeric codes without strict retail formatting.
If your scanner fails after export, verify quiet zone margins, print at 100% scale, and confirm the encoded value matches the label artwork.
- Retail shelf labels: EAN-13, EAN-8, UPC-A, UPC-E
- Warehouse cartons and logistics: Code 128, GS1-128, ITF-14
- Internal bins and asset tags: Code 39, Code 128, ITF
