Business overview
EBITDA—earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization—is a shorthand for how much operating activity generated before financing, tax, and non-cash D&A charges. Investors and lenders use it to compare businesses with different capital structures and asset intensity. Owners use it when net profit is noisy from loan interest or heavy depreciation on recent capex.
EBITDA is not cash. A company can report strong EBITDA and still face a liquidity squeeze from working capital, debt service, or tax payments. The metric also does not reward or penalise capex timing the way a cash-flow statement does—it is an operating lens, not a bank balance. Finance textbooks sometimes derive EBITDA from net profit by adding back interest, tax, D&A, and exceptional items. This tool does not use that path—it builds from revenue and operating expense lines so management packs stay tied to the top of the P&L.
Controllers map inputs from the income statement: revenue from net sales; operating expenses as total opex before depreciation and amortization lines; D&A from the non-cash charge rows. If your ERP rolls depreciation into COGS, extract it before entering opex or you will understate operating costs and overstate EBITDA.
The ZenBoxInfinity calculator uses one explicit bridge: Revenue, minus Operating Expenses (excluding D&A), plus Depreciation, plus Amortization. You must not include depreciation or amortization inside operating expenses—those lines are added back separately. Double-counting inflates EBITDA and breaks comparability with prior periods.

EBITDA margin (manual): 175,000 ÷ 500,000 = 35.00%—not computed by the tool but common in board packs.
Scope note: The calculator returns EBITDA only. It does not compute EBIT, net profit, interest coverage, or net debt / EBITDA. Derive those in Excel or your investment models when lenders or investors ask for leverage context alongside operating performance.

- Positive EBITDA, weak net profit: Often interest, tax, or exceptional items—expected; do not conflate the two.
- Negative EBITDA: Core operations loss before interest and tax—urgent review of pricing, mix, and fixed cost base.
- High EBITDA margin: Strong operating model if reproducible—watch one-offs in revenue or deferred opex.
- EBITDA up, cash down: Working capital or capex story—EBITDA will not warn you alone.
Common mistakes
Including D&A inside operating expenses
Then adding D&A again double-counts the add-back and overstates EBITDA.
Using gross revenue with net opex
Align revenue and expense basis—rebates and VAT treatment must match your P&L.
Treating EBITDA as distributable cash
Debt service, tax, and reinvestment still consume cash after EBITDA.
